Liberian Elections
Did you know that the Liberian Presidential Elections are coming up? Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, Africa's first female head of state and Liberia's president since 2006, is stepping down. According to the National Elections Commission of Liberia, 20 candidates are running for president, including Joseph Boakai (Sirleaf's vice president), George Weah (a former Liberian soccer player who was defeated by Sirleaf in the 2005 election), and Prince Johnson (a former rebel leader). October 10th is election day, and the final polling results are slated to be announced on October 25. Many believe the process will result in a run-off election between Weah (the candidate of the CDC or Coalition of Democratic Change Party) and Boakai (the governing Unity Party's candidate), but several newcomers are garnering attention.
As Liberians prepare to head to the polls, please keep the country, the political process, and the Liberian people in your prayers! Pray for a fair, safe election, and for peace to continue to flourish in Liberia.
